Project Background:

The Climate Smart Agriculture and Livelihoods Hub is a one-year pilot project (2024-2025) funded by the GitLab Foundation and implemented by CAP Youth Empowerment Institute – Kenya (CAPYEI) in Nyandarua County, Kenya.

The main objective of the project is to tackle youth unemployment, food insecurity, the effects of climate change, and low youth engagement in agricultural activities. In 2023, Kenya imported food worth hundreds of millions of dollars, resulting in the loss of nearly 1 million job opportunities in the farming sector.

The project will utilize the livelihoods approach using the CAPYEI model to train and support 50 youths (60% women) to secure jobs or create small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agriculture, hospitality, and green job sectors. A Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) hub has also been established to train and support 25 local farmers and provide a platform for youth to engage in Climate Agribusiness Demonstration and immersion at the Ol-Joro-Orok Demo farm.

The primary objective of training work readiness skills is to equip individuals with the fundamental competencies and attitudes needed to succeed in the workplace.

This includes developing essential soft skills, also known as employability skills, which are crucial for navigating diverse work environments and contributing effectively to any job.
